OUR HISTORY EXPLORED

The Heritage Boatyard Co-op is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting Nova Scotia’s South Shore wooden boatbuilding history.

Our funding is dependent on business, government, and individuals who share the same belief in keeping our history alive. We are a 100 percent volunteer organization.

Enjoy our tour and we hope you leave with a better understanding and appreciation of Mahone Bay’s deep rooted history of Boat Builders.

Completed Projects

For over 200 years boatbuilding was the core of our community. Boats were built in Mahone Bay to meet the demand of neighbouring communities involved in the fishing, transportation, trade and war efforts.

Current Projects

With support from our local businesses, our Town, the Mahone Bay Marina and a great volunteer base we have constructed our Boatbuilding Shed on the Mahone Bay Marina's property. The 16 ft by 20 ft boatbuilding shed is constructed the traditional way using local hemlock wood and post and beam joinery.

Events

The Heritage Boat Yard Co-operative Limited was incorporated on March 2, 2011 as a member of the Nova Scotia Co-operative Council by the Province of Nova Scotia with twelve subscribing members. Our stated objective is to establish and operate a small craft boat yard, model shop and education centre.
